A BETTER WORLD IS POSSIBLE

The question every socialist needs to ask is 'what is to be done'?  When we look around and see all of the problems that surround us, we can feel helpless. We don't have much power alone, but our collective power can change the world! So how do we take advantage of that power as a united working class? Well, that's where organizing comes in. DSA is an 'organization of organizers', where we recognize that we each have a role to play in our struggle for socialism. If you're looking to improve your organizing skills or learn some new ones, this is this place to start. Our Fundamentals of Organizing series will cover: What is Organizing? (virtual): Understanding the role of the organizer and how to develop a campaign to win strategic demands From Strategy to Tactics (virtual): Learning how to use tools like power mapping and research to determine the necessary steps to win demands Building People Power (in person): Developing practices to build a base through 1 on 1 conversations, ladders of engagement, and listwork. These lessons build off one another so it's recommended that you attend them in order when possible.  **Due to limited in person space, priority for the third session will be given to those who have attended the first two meetings. Philosophers have only interpreted the world. The point is to change it.

In-Person Cowork Session every second Thursday of the Month, 6pm Virtual Meeting every last Thursday of each month, 6pm Get involved in our electoral work on the local level and drop by our monthly in-person and virtual Electoral Politics Committee (EPC) Meetings. We regularly discuss ways to get involved in campaigns and how to move electeds on policy issues. ~ Join the Member Engagement Committee for a training on phonebanking best practices - and then a some time to put it into practice while driving turnout for our August Social and August New Member Orientation!  6:00pm - Short training, get onboarded into the phonebank app. 6:30pm - Start dialing! Practice by making calls for 1 hour 7:30pm - Debrief and enjoy a beer! 

Join Comms for our monthly virtual meeting, taking place on the first Monday of every month from 7-9 pm. We'll provide status updates on ongoing projects, discuss content creation and beyond. 

Join our Political Education Committee for Poetry in the Park! Each meeting we will discuss a few poems from a socialist poet or poets as a means to inspire and deepen our understanding of working class politics. Facilitators will help put the poems in historical context and we'll work together to develop an understanding of how the art expresses something about the world around us.  Develop new fascinations, explore your creativity, and talk with other like-minded socialists about how art and politics are meaningful avenues to combat our alienation under capitalism.    Sept. 12th - Bertolt Brecht Join us for the first meeting to learn more about German poet and playwright Bertolt Brecht through his work!  What folks should bring: Read the poems linked below and bring your happy, curious, poetic souls. Join our regular Political Education Committee meetings. PolEd creates educational programming such as regular night schools, member trainings, and reading groups to further develop our socialist analysis and practice. 

Every third Tuesday of the month, 6:30pm Help us welcome members into the seas of socialism! Right now, we're building pipelines to get new and old members plugged into the Chapter and its campaigns. If you're into breaking down barriers to engagement, this is a place for you.

Long Beach Transit is one of the best ways to get around our city. Not only does it support students, workers, and those with disabilities, but it also allows people to move within the city and not just through it. DSA-LB is organizing a campaign made of a mass coalition of transit riders and local organizations to demand a fare-free bus system in Long Beach by the 2028 Olympics. This is one of the deliberation and decision-making meetings this month for our campaign. Members will get to discuss the work we have done so far, introduce and vote on important proposals, and decide how to direct our resources this month. September 16: Hybrid Working Meeting at Trademark Brewing, 6-8pmBring your laptops and grab a drink! We will be working on high-priority campaign tasks and projects. Members who can't be in-person can join through the Zoom link to participate. Warning: in-person attendance carries the risk of joining after-meeting hangs. Please join DSA-LB for our next General Membership Meeting (GM)! These meetings are fundamental Chapter democracy since we'll discuss & debate important items that shape our organizing. Socialism requires a global effort to transform society and Long Beach, in particular, is an international city. The DSA Long Beach International Solidarity Committee (ISC) facilitates work around these struggles of the working class around the world, deepening an understanding of the interconnected nature of these struggles. ISC coordinates action with other local organizations, National DSA's International Committee (IC), and the rest of the Chapter's work around issues such as immigration, Palestinian liberation, the National Democratic Struggle in the Philippines, and Cuba solidarity. At this orientation, we’ll talk about: how capitalism functions and why socialism is radically opposed to it the history of our organization and our chapter in particular the current projects we’re working on and how you can get involved We'll also learn more from you about where you want to plug in and answer questions you might have! DSA-LB has endorsed Prop. 40 — the 2026 Billionaire Tax Act. The Act would levy a one-time 5% wealth tax on individuals with a net worth of more than $1 billion. This tax would fund crucial social services, jobs and healthcare in our state.  Join our Billionaire Tax Working Group at our next meeting as we build our campaign to tax the rich! Laptop/tablet recommended to bring, but not required.
