The decision of the conservative Supreme Court to strip Americans of their right to access abortion is appalling.
We are not surprised that the most conservative set of justices in decades are using their position to put tens of millions of people’s health and lives in jeopardy; the United States and its institutions were built to control and restrict the rights of freedom and liberty to a select privileged few, and the decision to overturn Roe is a continuation of these institutionally violent patterns.
DSA Long Beach stands in solidarity with every person who has had or will need to seek an abortion and recognizes the undue burden that this will place on working class, LGBTQ, immigrant, disabled, and non-white communities. Based on the rationale underlying the court’s opinion, we also stand in solidarity with LGBTQ communities and those who rely on access to birth control who are anticipating this decision will open a floodgate for those who wish to strip even more rights from Americans.
We will not stand idly by as unelected officials representing the wishes of the few make this country less safe and equitable for all; we remain committed to our struggle for socialist policies like Medicare For All, which must apply to abortion access and birth control for all who seek them. DSA—nationally and in Long Beach—has grown tremendously as many people have responded to deteriorating conditions and the creep of fascism by organizing with others. We owe it to each other and to the future to fight and to win these rights.
